Are Modern Diets Diluting the Nutrient Our Appetite Is Looking For?

We’ve spent decades asking why humans eat too much.

Maybe there’s another question worth asking:

Are we eating more because our food contains proportionally less of something our appetite strongly seeks?

That question sits at the heart of the Protein Leverage Hypothesis.

If you want the detailed science behind what is the protein leverage hypothesis, the concept was formally proposed by Professors Stephen Simpson and David Raubenheimer in 2005.

Their hypothesis suggests humans regulate protein intake relatively strongly.

When dietary protein is diluted by fat and carbohydrate, we may continue eating in an attempt to obtain enough protein.

The Modern Food Environment Creates an Interesting Test

Consider how easy it is to obtain calories today.

A pastry and juice for breakfast.

Biscuits with coffee.

Chips in the afternoon.

Takeaway for dinner.

Dessert afterwards.

Someone can consume substantial energy across the day without necessarily eating particularly large quantities of protein.

Under protein leverage, that mismatch matters.

The appetite isn’t necessarily asking:

Have I consumed enough calories?

Part of it may effectively be asking:

Have I obtained enough protein?

The Evidence Is Interesting

A 2014 meta-analysis examined 38 experimental trials investigating protein leverage and energy intake.

The overall relationship supported the hypothesis: as dietary protein percentage decreased, energy intake tended to increase.

Subsequent research has investigated protein leverage in population datasets and children.

None of this means protein explains the obesity epidemic by itself.

Food availability, genetics, sleep, physical activity, medications, socioeconomic circumstances and many other factors contribute.

But protein leverage provides one plausible mechanism connecting food composition with appetite.

What Can You Actually Do?

You don’t need to adopt an extreme high-protein diet.

Start by identifying meals where protein has almost disappeared.

Breakfast is often an obvious example.

Build meals around eggs, fish, lean meat, dairy, legumes or other protein-rich foods.

Then consider convenience.

A grass fed whey protein isolate can help increase protein intake when preparing a complete protein-rich meal isn’t practical.

But don’t let “protein powder” on the packet be enough.

If protein is the reason you’re buying it, a substantial proportion of the product should actually be protein.

The Protein Leverage Hypothesis doesn’t tell us to endlessly add more protein.

It gives us a more interesting question to ask about modern diets:

Have we diluted protein so much that we’re eating additional calories trying to find it?
