Collagen for Meniscus Problems: What Does the Latest Research Show?

Collagen research is becoming increasingly specific.

Rather than simply asking whether collagen is “good for joints”, researchers are beginning to investigate supplementation in particular musculoskeletal conditions.

One recent example involves the meniscus.

A 2025 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial adds an interesting new piece to the research into the benefits of collagen protein powder for joints.

What Did Researchers Study?

The study investigated collagen supplementation in people with meniscopathy.

After eight weeks, the collagen group showed significant improvements in measures including:

  • Pain
  • Quality of life
  • Kinesiophobia

Improvements were also reported in some measures of physical function.

Why Is This Interesting?

The meniscus plays an important role in knee function, including load distribution within the joint.

Research into nutritional strategies for people experiencing meniscus-related problems is therefore particularly interesting.

But there’s an important limitation.

This was a small study involving 32 participants, so the findings shouldn’t be exaggerated.

One trial doesn’t establish collagen as a treatment for meniscus injuries.

Instead, the study should be considered alongside the broader collagen literature.

What Does the Broader Research Say?

A 2021 systematic review of 15 randomised controlled trials found collagen supplementation appeared particularly beneficial for improving joint functionality and reducing joint pain.

A separate trial involving 139 physically active people also found improvements in activity-related knee pain after 12 weeks of specific collagen peptide supplementation.

Taken together, these studies provide a reasonable basis for continued interest in collagen protein powder for joint and connective-tissue support.

But the fundamentals don’t change.

Meniscus problems should be appropriately assessed and managed.

Collagen may support the nutritional side of the equation, but it doesn’t replace diagnosis, rehabilitation or appropriate exercise.
