Gym Body Odour: What Actually Helps (and Where Chlorophyll Fits)

Gym body odour is something nobody wants to bring up, but plenty of our members quietly ask about it, so let us deal with it properly.

Why gym body odour happens

Fresh sweat barely smells. Odour forms when bacteria on your skin, mostly in the armpits and groin, break down compounds in sweat. Training means more sweat, warm skin and tight synthetic clothing, which is a perfect setup for those bacteria.

What actually helps with gym body odour

  • Shower soon after training, with soap on armpits, groin and feet.
  • Apply antiperspirant at night, when it absorbs best.
  • Wear merino or cotton where you can, and never re-wear a training top.
  • Wash gym gear promptly and let shoes dry out between sessions.
  • Notice whether garlic, onion or alcohol the night before makes a difference.
  • See your GP if odour changes suddenly.

Your gym bag routine

Most gym body odour problems are really gym bag problems. Pack a clean top for after the session, a small towel and a travel antiperspirant. Use a separate breathable bag for sweaty gear and empty it the moment you get home, rather than leaving it zipped up overnight. Rotate two pairs of training shoes if you train most days, so each pair dries out fully, and pull the insoles out to air. Wash synthetic training tops inside out, on a warm wash, because that is where the bacteria build up. These small steps make a bigger difference than most people expect.

What about chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll was sold as an “internal deodoriser” in the 1950s, and it is still the number one reason people tell me they bought it. The research is old and mixed. A 1952 study found chlorophyllin taken by mouth did not change sweat odour. The best-designed trial, in colostomy patients, found it no better than placebo. The most positive result was in a rare metabolic condition. Propel Health Australia lays it all out in chlorophyll for body odour.

So think of chlorophyll as a daily green, not a deodorant. If you like the habit, you can buy liquid chlorophyll from Propel Health Australia. It is uncoppered and unflavoured, with no preservatives or additives.

Gym body odour quick answers

Does diet change body odour?

It can. Strong foods and alcohol come through in sweat for some people. Keep a simple diary for two weeks.

Does fitness change how much I sweat?

Fitter people often start sweating earlier and more, which helps cooling. It is a good sign, not a problem.
