Healthy habits after 40 are less about doing more and more about doing the right few things every week. After years of coaching people in their forties, fifties and sixties at our Samford gym, these are the seven habits we see make the biggest difference to how people move and feel.

1. Lift something heavy twice a week
Muscle and strength fade from our thirties onwards unless we train them. Two strength sessions of 30 to 45 minutes are enough for most people. Squat, hinge, push, pull, carry. Our strength training over 40 guide and strength training for men over 50 explain how to start.
2. Walk most days
Walking is the quiet achiever. Aim for a daily walk of 20 to 40 minutes, with a few hills when you can. It fits around everything else and rarely leaves you sore.
3. Protein at every meal
Most adults over 40 eat plenty of protein at dinner and not much at breakfast or lunch. Spreading it across the day makes more of your training. A palm-sized serve at each meal is a simple target.
4. Water at set times
Thirst becomes a less reliable cue as we age. Tie water to things you already do: a glass on waking, one with each meal, a bottle at every session.
Healthy habits after 40 that people skip
The next three are the ones clients most often leave out.
5. Balance practice
Balance is a skill, and it fades without practice. Thirty seconds on one leg while the kettle boils is a start. Our balance exercises for older adults take it further.
6. Planned recovery
Recovery takes a little longer after 40. Keep easy days easy and plan a lighter week every month or so. Our guide to soreness after training explains the difference between normal soreness and something to watch.
7. A regular sleep window
Going to bed and getting up at roughly the same times makes training feel easier. Seven to nine hours is the usual target.
Where supplements fit
Food and training come first. Supplements sit at the end of the list, and only once the basics are in place.
If you do use one, keep it simple: read the label, use the stated serve and add one thing at a time so you know what you are taking. Some clients ask about the liquid trace mineral products they see in health food stores. Here is a plain guide to one fulvic acid supplement, including the ingredient list and label serve.
How to start without overloading yourself
Pick one habit, not seven. Most people do best starting with the two strength sessions, because they change how everything else feels.
| Weeks | Add |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | Two strength sessions a week |
| 5 to 8 | Daily walk and water at set times |
| 9 to 12 | Protein at breakfast and lunch |
| 13 onwards | Balance practice, sleep window, planned lighter weeks |
Common questions
Is it too late to start strength training at 40, 50 or 60?
No. We start people in their sixties and seventies regularly. The body responds to strength work at any age.
How much exercise do I need each week after 40?
Australian guidelines suggest 2.5 to 5 hours of moderate activity a week plus muscle-strengthening work on at least two days. That is a good target.
Should I take supplements after 40?
Get training, food, sleep and water right first. If you add a product, read the label and follow the stated serve.
Which habit matters most?
For most people over 40, regular strength training. It is the habit most often missing and the one with the widest effect on how people move.
When to get it checked
If you have been inactive for a long time, have a heart or lung condition, or have pain that stops you training, see your GP and then an exercise physiologist before ramping up.
