Reasons your Coach doesn’t want you Watching Training

I am writing this as a Coach and a Parent.

I understand your desire to watch your child train and practice. I mean, you’re paying for it. And you’re showing interest.

But there are some good reasons why we (Coaches) would prefer you don’t.

Your Child is Different when you’re Around

I’ve had plenty of discussions with Parents who don’t believe this.

But it’s true, 100%.

Your child is probably different in the classroom, in front of their grandparents, with their friends, while playing their sport and in the gym.

time to Build our Relationship

As Coaches, we value the time we spend with our Athletes.

In fact, one of the best predictors of the success of their program is our relationship with them.

Do they trust us? Can they confide in us? Will they work harder because of us?

These, and plenty more, are reasons we need to build our relationship with them.

This process is stunted if 1) the athlete doesn’t feel they can be themselves or 2) if the parent doesn’t allow the relationship to grow.

It’s Their Time (WIthout you)

Parents are vital to the development of a child.

And so are Parent-free occasions.

During these parent-free times is when a child can grow. They can build their independence. They can push some boundaries. They can learn and refine new social skills.

De-powers the Coach

The younger the athlete, the more this is true.

And the younger the coach, the more this is true.

Your presence will often de-power the Coach.

And if you want whats best for your child, you don’t want this to happen.

Also…

Your kids are safe. They’re active.

So use this time to build your own fitness. Or go for a walk.

Or use it as down time (but get off your phone!). Or interact with your other kids.

Or get the groceries done. Or read (a book!).
